Why should I have a HPVCheck?

HPVCheck is a comfortable and reliable at-home cervical cancer screening test that detects the Human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus that causes cervical cancer. 

HPV testing is now approved by the NHS as a reliable method of cervical cancer screening.  If you have never attended the National Cervical Screening Programme, you can still find out if you are carrying the virus which leads to almost all cases of cervical cancer.

What is HPV?

HPV stands for Human papillomavirus, a  virus that is extremely common - with four in five people exposed to the virus at some point in their lives through sexual transmission or intimate contact. 

It is also the leading cause of cervical cancer in women, with 99.7% of cervical cancers being caused by HPV.

HPVCheck will test for the most common sub-types of HPV 16 and 18, identifying women potentially at a high risk of cervical cancer.

  • There are 13 types of high-risk HPV that cause cervical cancer. Our test reports on the two most common high-risk sub-types HPV 16 and 18. If you are found to have one of the other high-risk sub-types, your report will show this as 'other.' Any treatment which may be required is exactly the same for all high-risk sub-types. 
  • Knowledge of HPV 16 and 18 status is useful not only from a risk point of view but if you wish to be vaccinated with the HPV vaccine and you fall outside the age range of the NHS programme for HPV vaccination.
  • There are two vaccines approved for HPV, one covers HPV subtypes 6,11,16, and 18 and the second one covers HPV subtypes 6,11,16,18,31,33,45,52, and 58. You can find out more about the two vaccines here.
What does the HPVCheck test at-home kit contain?
  • A sterile collection kit is posted out to you at home in discrete packaging by free tracked mail.
  • Complete the at-home sample collection kit by following the simple instructions provided in the test kit. You can view the kit instructions here. 
What do I do with the HPV test kit when I have completed it?
  • Complete the at-home sample collection kit by following the simple instructions provided in the test kit.
  • Return your sample to our laboratory by Freepost and expect your results within 5 days of the laboratory receiving your sample.
  • Our team of specialists will analyse your test results and provide you with a personalised screening programme. 
What happens if my HPVCheck test results are abnormal ?
  • If your test is abnormal, we will call you before sending your results letter.  
  • We will then send you a results letter that will have information regarding the specific HPV subtype that is abnormal, as well as a letter to take to your GP to arrange onward referral to the NHS for further investigation and management.

No cancer screening test will pick up all cancers. Although screening programmes are designed to detect cancers that are at an earlier stage, and have a better survival, this may not always be the case.
